- Jonathan apples really do make the best apple pies for dessert on Christmas Day.
- A baked, honey-cured spiral ham is one of those foods that’s hard to stop eating, even though you want to save room for a piece of apple pie for Christmas dessert.
- Grilled shrimp with Greek salad is the perfect day-after-the-holiday meal for someone who couldn’t stop eating baked, honey-cured spiral ham and had two pieces of apple pie for dessert on Christmas Day.

The man of steel and I are so hopelessly behind the times, we didn’t finish watching the 2002–2010 TV series, Lost, until last weekend. (We viewed it on Netflix rather than doing the time travel thing to watch them in an alternate universe in real time.) The finale led to many thoughts, and here are my top three.
- Sawyer is the ultimate cowboy. Give the man a weapon and he can strut like a con man cowboy, island cowboy, sea-faring cowboy, airborne cowboy, policeman cowboy. And all without a horse.
- Hiram caught onto the eye thing long before me and correctly predicted what would happen at the very end.
- The Dharma Initiative was one of the biggest threads left dangling by the writers. Personally, I think the initiative’s purpose was to explain the launch the generic food packaging movement in the late 1970s (also known as Sawyer’s jumpsuit cowboy period) so as not to alarm the general public. How do you explain the Dharma Initiative?

- These days, we seem to run out of sympathy cards faster than any other variety of greeting cards. Most of the recipients are people of our parents’ generation rather than our own. Even so, this is not a happy trend.
- On the other hand, baby cards are running a close second since people of our kids’ generation are being fruitful and multiplying with gusto. Babies are always a happy trend…for those who get to send cards but don’t have to stay up all night with little ones who get their days and nights mixed up.
- Members of the Baby Boomer generation are wondering what this year’s trends for and against sending Christmas cards so
I can decide they can decide whether to send them, too.
Leave a comment to help me members of the Baby Boomer generation settle the issue once and for all.

Furbies, kids’ electronic tablets, and Yvolution scooters top almost every list of 2012’s hottest Christmas toys. Those lists led to these three thoughts about hot toys of past years.
- Hot toys for my kids were anything in the Lego castle line and American Girl dolls. Those toys are now in storage.
- The hot toy when I was in third grade was Chatty Cathy. I pulled the string on mine so much, it only lasted two days.
- Mom remembers one Christmas during the Great Depression when her only present was a stick of gum. Presumably the gum provided a day of chewing pleasure…or more if it spent the night on the bedpost.
Kinda puts things in perspective, doesn’t it? What were the hot gifts when you were a kid? How long could you make a stick of gum last? Leave a comment!

With the field crops harvested and the temperatures falling, I should have anticipated the Great Mouse Invasion of 2012. But ever the optimist, I assumed we would disarm Mickey and Minnie with our preemptive garage mouse trap maneuvers. Those efforts were a failure of epic proportions, but all was not lost since the experience led to these three mousy thoughts for Thursday.
- The good news is that, thanks to the early plethora of traps in the garage, no mice have invaded my car…yet.
- The bad news is that, with the garage full of miniscule landmines, Mickey, Minnie, the mouse with the peg leg, the one driving a pony cart, and a cast of thousands relocated to our house. They like it so much, they party all night, every night, though their ranks are thinning, thanks to our newly established trap line.
- Maybe Disney will celebrate their purchase of the Star Wars franchise with an intergalactic foray starring Micky and Minnie movie. So maybe we can capitalize the Great Mouse Invasion of 2012, live trap our cast of thousands and send them–for a hefty finders fee–to California to become stars.
What do you do when the wildlife moves in? How do you keep that from happening? Leave a comment.

This week’s election brought back memories of my brief presidential campaign in fifth grade–and led to these three thoughts for Thursday:
- When Chuck Cram and I ran against one another for class president, our teacher Miss Harley didn’t allow us to trash talk one another. Too bad she wasn’t in charge this year’s election.
- Our campaign was devoid of debates for two reasons: we were more interested in watching Gilligan’s Island and The Beverly Hillbillies than preparing for a debate, since we all knew from the outset who would win.
- Chuck won the election. He was a shoo-in from the start, since our class had more boys than girls in it. Too bad decisions aren’t that easy to make these days!
