Three Thoughts for Thursday…on a Monday

fireworks

Today’s post has been preempted by Three Thoughts for Thursday, which had their feelings hurt when they were preempted by the 4th of July.

  1. As a young kid, I thought the founding fathers were very thoughtful to schedule Independence Day on the 4th of July so both holidays could be celebrated on the same day.
  2. As a teenager, our high school crowd gathered in Mary Anne Cassel’s lawn  on July 4th because it offered an unobstructed view of the fireworks. Not only was our crowd blessed with deep and lasting friendships, we were blessed by Mary Anne’s parents, who made every one of us feel important and valued.
  3. As an adult, two July 4th fireworks displays stand out. The first was when the rocket launcher went awry and started the grass around the airport on fire. The second was in Alaska where we pretended the fireworks were visible in the land of the midnight sun.

What’s your favorite 4th of July memory? Leave a comment.

Three Somber Thoughts for Thursday

Three Somber Thoughts for Thursday

Short grass prairie SD

  1. Last Thursday, word came that a high school friend had died of cancer. On Friday, the mother emailed to say her son with special needs had died during corrective surgery. On Monday, a friend was killed when a car hit his bicycle as he trained for RAGBRAI.
  2. Yesterday I listened to the debate in the wake of the Supreme Court’s DOMA ruling, some reasoned, some fearful, some angry.
  3. Life is brief. Cultures shift. Laws change. But in the midst of loss and storm, take comfort in this truth:

All flesh is grass,
and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower fades
when the breath of the Lord blows on it;
surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.
Isaiah 40: 6–8

Three Tech Geek vs. Writer Geek Thoughts for Thursday

Three Tech Geek vs. Writer Geek Thoughts for Thursday

writertechie person

The Cedar Falls Christian Writer’s Workshop is underway. Wednesday was devoted to learning about online social media. Today through Saturday are all about writing. Here are 3 observations about the differences between the inner tech geek and the inner writer geek.

  1. Writer geeks talk a lot.                                                                                          Tech geeks, not so much.
  2. Writer geeks tend to be very expressive. Dramatic even, especially if they write fiction or screen plays.                                                                                                     Tech geeks are more like my German grandfather who did not wear his heart on his sleeve.
  3. Writer geeks consider tech stuff to be magical.Tech geeks consider tech stuff to be logical.

3 Father’s Day Thoughts for Thursday

3 Father’s Day Thoughts for Thursday

three

  1. This year I bought two Father’s Day cards: one for my husband and one for my son. No words exist to describe what it felt like to do that.
  2. My husband and I spent Saturday afternoon washing windows. While there may not be a scientific study that proves husbands who wash windows make good fathers, I’m convinced there’s a direct correlation.
  3. On Father’s Day, I’ll think about sitting on the couch with my dad while we watched The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres together. What will you be remembering about your dad?

Three thoughts

A l-o-n-g layover at the Denver airport was perhaps too much time for reflecting on recent Super Shuttle rides from the LAX airport to Ocean Beach and back, as these three thoughts show:

  1. Seating a country girl in the front passenger seat during LA rush hour may not be a wise idea. It feels a lot like riding with a teenager who’s learning to drive.
  2. Then again, sitting in the back seat with a clear view of the speedometer while a maniac driver crosses 5 lanes of traffic while driving 75 mph may not be wise either.
  3. Even so, the shuttle is preferable and much safer than setting a country girl loose in a rental car in California. And it’s cheaper than a taxi, so next time I’ll pack my own blindfold, gag, and Valium and travel happy.

What’s your preferred ground transportation to get from the airport to wherever you’re going? Leave a comment.

Three Thoughts for Thursday

  1. The man of steel and his chain saw are spending all their free time cutting up the huge branch that fell in a windstorm Monday morning. He’s happy. I’m happy, too, but also curious. Can anyone explain why operating a chain saw is so fundamental to the existence of the males of our species?
  2. Did you know that sheets hanging on the clothes line when a rainstorm moves in smell like spring rain when run through the dryer? Don’t ask how I know this.
  3. I’m so bummed to have missed the Captain Kangaroo memorabilia auction last week. The heavy tap of Captain Kangaroo’s thick chalk on the chalkboard and the scritchy snick when he pulled a length of tape from the dispenser fascinated me.  I would have paid good money for either item. What did you like best about the Captain and his entourage?
