Three Thoughts for Thursday

Those Super Bowl wiener dogs, Man of Steel love, and Thurgood Marshall in this week's three thoughts.

  1. The Super Bowl commercial with the bun-wrapped wiener dogs running toward the Heintz condiments almost made me want another daschund. Almost is the operative word here.
  2. Last Saturday, the Man of Steel spent all day fixing a bathroom sink plumbing issue and he filled out a volunteer application for this summer’s Wonderfully Made Family Camp. Gotta love the guy.
  3. Wil Haygood’s biography, Showdown: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court Nomination that Changed America, is so worth reading. A perfect way to pass the time until spring comes.

Power outages, talking to a friend, and Valentine's Day in this week's 3 thoughts.

  1. There’s nothing like a power outage to make a person appreciate electricity.
  2. Happiness is a phone call from a friend you haven’t talked to for a long time and feeling like you’ve never been apart.
  3. This Valentine’s Day, I’ll be thankful for the Man of Steel. We don’t have the overalls he wore when he proposed, though I still have my jumper. And we still have each other. Life doesn’t get much better than this.

What are you thankful for this week? Leave a comment.

Downton Abbey, love according to Dorothy, and the loss of a wonderful man in this week's 3 thoughts.

  1. Unless Julian Fellows has something up his sleeves, there’s no way Isobel Crawley can pull ahead of Lady Violet in their zinger contest before the series ends.
  2. At the end of my last visit with Mom–after I’d taken her to the doctor, squired her to lunch, and restocked her supply of library books–she said, “You’re so good to me, Jolene. Don’t change, okay?” That’s as close as she gets to “I love you” without coaching.
  3. Melvin Aspengren, the most outstanding elementary school janitor I ever worked with, died earlier this week. He took pride in his work, cared about kids, and was a role model to children and adults alike. Oh, Mel, you will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

Alan Rickman, airline pilots cheering on their teams, and flight attendant gossip in this week's 3 thoughts.

  1. Alan Rickman, you are and will be dearly missed.
  2. If you are ever on a Southwest Airline flight to Arizona while an Arizona Cardinals play off game is in progress, the pilot commandeer the loudspeaker to provide color commentary and lead a few cheers.
  3. Nabbing the last available aisle seat in the last row of an airplane comes with a couple unexpected perks. Not only are you mere feet from the lavatory, but you can also hear the flight attendants gossip when they’re seated during take off and touch down.

By the time I get to Phoenix, Ellie May Clampett's critters, and Facebook ads in this week's three thoughts.

  1. My sister texted the following weather report for our vacation in Phoenix: “Rainy and cool. Yuck!” I texted back: “I’ll take rainy and cool in Phoenix over Snowy and frigid in Iowa any day.”
  2. Now that Donna Douglas, the actress who played Elly May Clampett on the Beverly Hillbillies, who’s going to take care of the critters in the CE-ment pond?
  3. Lately, my Facebook news feed has been crowded with ads about Parkinson’s Disease and stretch mark remover for new moms. What conceivable algorithm would target one person for for both topics?

David McCullough and The Wright Brothers, a Downton Abbey movie, and glitter in this week's 3 thoughts.

  1. Note to self: Do not allow glittery Christmas cards anywhere near your work area unless you like holiday sparkle on all surfaces, including your laptop keyboard and your favorite pens for days and weeks to come.
  2. David McCullough’s The Wright Brothers is a fascinating book and the audio version is read by the author. I highly recommend it.
  3. Rumor has it a Downtown Abbey movie is in the works. I’m in.
