Three Thoughts for Thursday

Three Thoughts for Thursday

Wow, it’s Thursday already and Christmas is only two days away. Here’s what’s rattling around in my head as the holiday approaches.

  1. Tuesday, Mom explained why she loves the song White Christmas. “I was with her dad the first time he heard it in the 40s. He said, ‘That’s a pretty song,’ something he didn’t say often. I think of his words whenever I hear the song.”
  2. Yesterday was eternal optimist day in the northern hemisphere. For the next six months, the minutes of daylight will increase. Can already feel the extra vitamin D turning you into an optimist?
  3. After a week of spray painting an old metal stool, sanding off the drips and runs, applying new coats of spray paint, and sanding off new drips and runs I’ve removed professional spray painter from my list of dream jobs. It’s time to move on to professional bon bon eater.

Three Thoughts for Thursday

Only three weeks until the kids arrive to celebrate Christmas, and there’s no snow in the yard and no presents under the tree. As soon as I think three thoughts for Thursday, maybe I should order a snow making machine or start wrapping presents…whichever is easier, that is.

  1. How can a robo call about “a very important message about your credit card account” be all that important? If it was, wouldn’t a real person be on the line?
  2. After a day spent sprucing up Mom’s old metal stool, I’m wondering why anyone huffs spray paint.
  3. To whoever invented the chocolate used for dipping pretzels and Ritz cracker and peanut butter sandwiches…you had a much better idea than whoever invented spray paint for covering old metal stools.

How about you? What’s on your mind this Christmas season? Leave a comment!

Three Happy Thoughts for a Dark Thursday

Three Happy Thoughts for a Dark Thursday

December’s meager daylight rations can make it hard to stay positive. But I came up with three happy thoughts for this dark, December Thursday.

  1. A functioning furnace and speedy furnace repair people are fully appreciated only after the furnace goes out on a very cold day.
  2. The Kennedy Center Honorees (Barbara Cook, Neil Diamond, Yo-Yo Ma, Sonny Rollins & Meryl Streep) certainly deserved recognition. But whoever invented flannel jammies should be on the list, too.
  3. A couple days ago a sassy, red fox trotted down our lane. Maybe it was looking for a pair of flannel jammies and a house with a functioning furnace.

Who do you nominate for next year’s Kennedy Center awards? What thoughts make you happy during dark December? Leave a comment.

Three Thoughts for Thursday, December 1, 2011

It’s Thursday again, so here are three thoughts for the day before the weekend:

  1. You know you’re getting older when…the parenting books you write are ordered by your former third grade student who has three children.
  2. During presidential campaigns, we Iowans don’t have to buy tickets to a three ring circus ‘cause it comes to us. In the first ring, Cain’s falling falling fast while Newt’s moving up in the second. Standing tall in the center ring, Mitt and Michelle remain perfectly coifed.
  3. It’s only December first, and already I’m craving Grandma Josie’s heirloom Christmas specialties – wild plum pudding and tapioca fruit salad. What traditional Christmas foods are making sugar plums dance in your head?

Three Thoughts for Thanksgiving Thursday

Three Thoughts for Thanksgiving Thursday

Thanksgiving Day has arrived, and it’s time for three thoughts for Thursday. Here goes…

  1. Favorite Thanksgiving smell – onions and celery sauteing in butter for the dressing.
  2. Favorite Thanksgiving food – real mashed potatoes and homemade turkey gravy.
  3. Favorite Thanksgiving memory as an adult- listening to two elderly (and I mean elderly – both in their mid to late nineties) arguing about who spilled the pie crust crumbs on the tablecloth:
    “You spilled them crumbs, Gladys.”
    “No, you spilled them, Ginny.”
    “No, it was you.”
“They’re right where you was sitting.”
“But you pushed your plate over there. I seen you.”
“It was you who spilled, right there on Jolene’s tablecloth that matched them paper napkins so good…”

Now it’s your turn. What are your Thanksgiving faves?

Three Thoughts for Thursday, November 17

Only one week until Thanksgiving, and it’s hard to hold off the vittles talk until then. In the meantime, here are three mostly non-foodie thoughts for this chilly, sunny Thursday.

  1. Republican presidential candidates and bald eagles are circling all over my home state of Iowa. I think the bald eagles are the more majestic of the two. How about you?
  2. Our immediate family will soon consist of two Hawkeyes, two Buckeyes, and two Cheeseheads. The possibilities for new Christmas jammies are endless!
  3. My favorite pie flavor is cherry. What’s yours?
