Three Thoughts for Ground Hog Thursday

Three Thoughts for Ground Hog Thursday

Today is Ground Hog Day and it’s time for Three Thoughts for Thursday. That’s way more excitement than necessary for your average rodent. But to avoid hearing Thumper or Mickey or Chip and Dale call me a party pooper, these three thoughts will remain right on schedule.

  1. It’s sunny in Iowa again today, which means 6 weeks of winter for us. Neither I nor the woodchuck under our shed are complaining, since the winter of the 2012 has been mighty springlike so far.
  2. Bad news for Buddy Holly fans. The Surf Ball Room Winter Dance Party (Feb. 2, 2012 in Clear Lake, IA) , which commemorates the last concert performed by Holly, Dion and the Belmonts, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper before they died in a plane crash, is sold out. That’s bad news for Pat Boone fans, too, since he’s on stage that night. I’m guessing that in a Venn Diagram, the circles representing the two fan groups would not intersect.
  3. Our local grocery store’s convenience fresh produce section carries plastic containers of peeled clementine oranges. But doesn’t that defeat the reason to buy clementines? Because they’re easier to peel than their bigger rellies?
Three Thoughts for Thursday

Three Thoughts for Thursday

This is the last Thursday in January, a happy thought for everybody who doesn’t claim winter as their favorite season. These three thoughts for Thursday are dedicated to anyone who’s glad to be one month closer to spring.

  1. Yesterday, across the street from where I was parked, a crane operator scrambled up the inside of the scaffolding on the machine’s giant arm. He went at least two stories up,and then came back down. I immediately crossed crane operator off my mental list of future career options.
  2. Has anybody else out there noticed the sun rising a little earlier and setting a little later? Hooray for Vitamin D, the comeback kid.
  3. On Tuesday, a radio announcer said it was the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to the world as Dr. Seuss. However, other sources list March 4 as his birthday.  Well, if anyone deserves two birthdays, it’s Dr. Seuss! Help me celebrate by leaving a comment about your fave Dr. Seuss book.

Mine’s The Butter Battle Book. What’s yours?

Three Thoughts for a Chilly Thursday

Three Thoughts for a Chilly Thursday

My, my, my it’s cold outside today. Apparently, winter’s a little upset about not being invited to her own party in 2012 and is now making her presence known. Maybe these three thoughts for Thursday will melt her icy little heart!

  1. If you think our world isn’t a safe place, think again. The Apostrophe Protection Society’s vigilance in keeping punctuation terrorists at bay is constant and well-documented at their website.
  2. When I grow up, I want to go to high tea with Maggie Smith at Downton Abbey. Provided she’s not at Hogwarts that day, of course.
  3. The Super Bowl-themed coupon flyer in our Sunday paper was puzzling. First came the ads for football snack foods. Then came disposable diapers, Depends, and feminine hygiene products coupons. At the end, more ads for munchies. Do you think the advertisers were sending subliminal suggestions about what to do if the halftime show is a bust?

So, what will you be doing during the Super Bowl halftime?

Three Thoughts for Thursday

Three Thoughts for Thursday

Thursday’s here, along with winter weather. The perfect day for getting warm and cuddly while thinking Thursday thoughts. Here goes:

  1. Did you hear about the Hostess Baking Company declaring bankruptcy? One business commentator said it happened because Hostess products didn’t adapt to changing consumer tastes. But if they had adapted, would you want to eat sugar-free Ho Hos, fat-free Zingers, or organic Twinkies?
  2. First Herman Cain dropped out of the presidential race. Now Michelle Bachmann. Who’s left?
    Newt
    Mitt
    Rick
    Ron
    John
It looks like a Republican conspiracy to force a candidate with one syllable name upon unsuspecting voters. What is the world coming to?
  3. Need a pick-me-up this weekend? Try my friend Clare’s fudge brownie recipe. She served them at our writers’ critique group Tuesday. The recipe is posted at her foodie blog, www.nanaclareskitchen.com. The glaze on top of them – divine!
Three New Years Thoughts for Thursday

Three New Years Thoughts for Thursday

After an Iowa New Year’s weekend full of family, fun, and food followed by the 2012 caucuses, it’s hard to choose just three thoughts for this Thursday. But, here’s my best shot:

  1. I received Parenthood, Seasons 1 & 2 for Christmas so our fam watched the pilot and first episode Sunday night. The story line, music, and actors hooked both kids and their spouses. Which makes me feel like one trendsetting, hip and cool jive momma!
  2. Hiram and I once again watched the Lord of the Rings Trilogy over Christmas weekend. Since then, the similarity between the hairstyles body types of college and pro football players and the orcs has disturbed me. Anyone else bothered by that?
  3. The Iowa caucuses are over. We won’t miss the constant string of robo-calls and survey phone calls. But before hanging up on the caucuses for another four years, take a look at Caucus Time…with a Muppet Flair by my friend and former reporter, Melissa Tagg. Which muppet would you vote for?

Three Thoughts for Thursday

The kids are here, and my computer time is limited. Even so, here are three quick thoughts for Thursday.

  1. This winter is the first snowless one since 2007. Native Iowans over the age of 30 are okay with this, but the newscasters here to cover the caucuses are not. Shooting footage in front of a tired, brown landscape in shirtsleeves doesn’t have the same impact as wearing a parka in front of an eight foot snow drift.
  2. Unfortunately, a bag of after Christmas, half-price miniature Reeces peanut butter cups does not have half the calories of regularly priced candy.
  3. Giving www.jolenephilo.com a facelift took much longer than expected, but I’m pleased with the results. Though maybe we stretched the skin too tightly over the cheekbones. What do you think?
