Three Fashion Thoughts for Thursday

high heel shoes

Though Mom spent a considerable amount of her child-raising years thumping my head and hissing, “It’s not polite to stare,” people-watching is still one of my favorite travel pass times. Here are a few people-watching fashion thoughts from last week’s trip:

  1. Skinny pants do not look good on 99.9% of women.
  2. Why can’t Holiday Inn provide blazers tailored to women’s figures for their desk staff? I’m not talking sexy, just comfortable, flattering, and the right size.
  3. High heels keep getting higher, even though some health officials say more women are injured because of high heels than sports injuries. Being a safety first kind of gal, I plan to avoid both high heels and sports. How about you?

Corpus Christi

  1. The high temperature in Iowa has been hovering around 20°. The high temperature in Corpus Christi, Texas has been about 70°. No wonder Texas has to be such a big state. They need lots of extra room for snow birds.
  2. This week I’ll be a Corpus Christi snow bird–for work, not pleasure–for the first time ever. Any advice on how to break my January habit of packing wool sweaters and socks? Should I take a cowboy hat instead?
  3. My Texas drawl is sadly lacking. But I’m working really hard to stop answering questions with, “Yah, sure, you betcha.” No sense having people think I’m from Minnesota.

Cabinet Thoughts

  1. I don’t want to disappoint the president. So hopefully, he won’t ask me to be in his new cabinet. I couldn’t handle people talking mean about me like they’re doing to Chuck Hagel.
  2. Potential cabinet nominees should be required to watch all seven seasons of West Wing so they know how to walk down halls and talk fast before they get the job.
  3. So far, I’ve watched five West Wing seasons and am getting pretty good at talking fast while walking. I still have a ways to go. But even as a master walk-talker, I’ll turn down a cabinet spot. I’m perfectly happy filling my own cabinets with stuff from the local grocery store where the clerks talk nice to everybody. How about you?

Never Thought I'd See the Day

Current events and my advancing age are the source of these never-thought-I’d-live-to-see-the-day thoughts for Thursday.

  1. I never thought I’d live to see Bill Murray portray any president, much less Franklin Delano Roosevelt. How can the nation reconcile FDR with memories of Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, and the Saturday Night Live cone heads?
  2. I never thought I’d live to see the women’s fashion pendulum swing to skinny pants 3 times–the 1960s (thanks to Laura Petry on The Dick Van Dyke Show), the 1980s, and the 2010’s.
  3. Last, but certainly not least, I never thought I’d live to see cat eye glasses frames like Mom’s from the 60’s make a come back.

What about you? What current event has you shaking your head this week?

Three New Year Thoughts for Thursday

Three New Year Thoughts for Thursday

ID-10091619

  1. This year, I’m relaxing my long-standing, never-make-new-year-resolutions stance because I finally came up with one I’m sure to keep: find more sources of dairy-free chocolate.
  2. In childhood, I spent New Year’s morning waiting for the Rose Bowl Parade to start and then watching starry-eyed as princesses glided down the street on floats covered with flower petals. This New Year, I spent the morning getting business stuff ready for tax season. Oh, to be a kid again!
  3. The man of steel and I took Mom out to New Year’s lunch at a family-owned Mexican restaurant with delicious food and had a good time. How about you?
