The tornado that roared through Moore, Oklahoma and flattened the Plaza Towers elementary school brought to life the worst nightmare of every teacher in the Midwest. Since it happened, these three thoughts have been running through my mind.
- Lord, whisper comfort and safety to the children who survived the tornado.
- Lord, wrap your arms around the teachers who are grieving because they couldn’t save every child in their care.
- Lord, may the parents who lost their beloved children in this tragedy know that you are weeping with them and that their children are safe in your presence for eternity.
It would be an honor to have you share your prayers for the residents of Moore, Oklahoma in the comment box.

- The Sunday paper featured an ad for sassy, sweet, tomato dipping sauce. In the olden days–say last week or so–we called that stuff ketchup. Or catsup. But never sassy, sweet, tomato dipping sauce.
- This spring the male eastern cicadas are emerging from their below ground man caves, an event that happens every 17 years. Apparently, the sex-starved fellas will wiggle their abdomens, at a decibel level irresistible to the females of their species, but maddeningly loud to the rest of creation. Sure sounds like the plot to a Star Trek movie to me.
- Speaking of Star Trek movies, I’m a big fan of Benedict Cumberbatch. Except I forget his name a lot and remember it as Bartholomew Cumberbund. No wonder he didn’t invite me to the movie’s premier.
What do you call sassy, sweet, tomato dipping sauce? Ketchup? Catsup? Or Bartholomew Cumberbund?

- Though my parents were not of royal birth, princess was at the top of my what-do-you-want-to-be-when-you-grow-up list when I was a kid.
- People with childhood vocational aspirations similar to mine don’t understand the protests against the Barbie Dream House Mansion in Germany. If someone could explain it, we’d be most grateful.
- If you’re still trying to think of the perfect Mother’s Day gift, how about buying your mom a tiara and treating her like a princess all day long? That would totally work for me!
So what’s on your Mother’s Day shopping or wish list? Leave a comment!

- Did you know that before 1974, when the exclamation mark was added to standard typewriter keyboards, it was made by striking the period key, backspacing, and then striking the apostrophe key? Perhaps this explains the proliferation of exclamation marks used by the writing public in recent decades!!!
- A week ago, I had a subdermal (that means just under the skin) lump removed from near my right hip bone. The biopsy determined it was a benign lump of fat. I’m vain enough to wish the lump had been a little bigger, so it would qualify as a weight loss plan. Or liposuction. I’m not picky. Just vain.
- I think winter weather after May 1 should be outlawed. Anyone want to say Amen to that?

- Back in junior high, I read a biography of the ballerina Maria Tallchief, who I figured had to be at least 80 years old since she was retired. Imagine my surprise at the news of her death at age 88 last week!
- As Mom’s representative payee, I am required to complete a detailed, multipage report to account for her tiny Civil Service pension, a somewhat detailed one page report about her much larger Social Security pension, and absolutely nothing about her equally large state employee pension. Can anyone explain the logic behind that?
- Since the oatmeal and whole wheat flour I put in chocolate chip cookies makes them twice as good for a person, that means they’re four times as good for me if I eat twice as many of them as usual, right?
What faulty math’s been plaguing you this week? Leave a comment.

- After three days of April showers, the grass is greener on this side of the street.
- Women’s basketball has come a long way from the 1920s when the uniform my aunt Emma wore consisted of a white middy blouse, knee-length black bloomers, long black stockings, and high-topped white shoes. But knowing Aunt Emma, she was every bit as scrappy as the women in the NCAA final game this week.
- My new favorite way to escape is to watch Pushing Daisies, a TV show that only ran for 2 seasons, from 2007-2009. Sigh! The cast includes the amazingly talented Kristin Chenoweth, and the show is total fantasy, fun, and style wrapped in one wacky package. What’s your favorite escapist television or movie venue?
