Three Thoughts for Thursday

bread bag hanger

  1. In case you are wondering, I did wear plastic bread bags over my shoes in place of boots during my humble, Iowa childhood.
  2. But only when I forgot to pack boots for winter visits to my Minnesota cousins’ farms.
  3. Lest the Minnesota connection disqualifies my humble, Iowa childhood my grandmother (who grew up in Iowa and lived there until she was in her late 20s) wrapped plastic bread bags around wire coat hangers to make the padded hangers which are used at our Iowa address to this very day.

What made your childhood humble? Leave a comment.

  1. Dolly Parton turned 69 on Monday. That means she was still in her 20s when her song Jolene made me a local sensation during my junior year of high school. Happy birthday, Dolly. You have the voice of an angel.
  2. Winter Bliss: A January thaw that leads to unexpected morning walks outdoors.
  3. If the past two episodes are any indication, I need to lay in a supply of tissues before the series’ finale of Parenthood. Are you with me on that?

donna douglas 33

  1. Now that Donna Douglas, who played Elly May Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies, has died, who would you nominate as the new spokesperson for hillbilly chic?
  2. The Exotic Marigold Hotel is the best movie we’ve watched this year. Though I was disappointed it ended without a Bollywood dance number featuring Maggie Smith. What have you been watching?
  3. Moving Mom into assisted living is the hardest thing my sibs and I have done in a long time. What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to do?

Uno Crowd

  1. Mystery novelist P.D. James died this week. What a loss! She was a master of her craft who didn’t write her first novel until age 42. She was also a fascinating person, as this Fresh Air interview reveals.
  2. In the past week, I’ve purchased a new phone, a new car, and a new computer. Days like these shall never be seen again.
  3. My daughter and her two cousins spent the Saturday night after Thanksgiving playing Uno with their grandmother. The memory makes my heart smile.
