Three Very Clean Thoughts for Thursday

too clean

  1. Have you heard the good news? A recent Swedish study says our clean houses may be causing allergies in kids. I plan to cut my cleaning efforts by half to celebrate.
  2. The good news is even better for this mom whose kids were grown and out of the house before the study came out. No need to worry about them using the results to get out of cleaning their rooms.
  3. However, would you please keep the news to yourself? The Man of Steel, who is also Chief Vacuum Officer at this house, doesn’t need to know.

How are you celebrating the good news?

NesteCandyBars

  1. Mom was not impressed when I told her I was giving up dairy for Lent. Just in case God wasn’t impressed either, I gave up chocolate as well.
  2. A steaming cup of cinnamon tea and a handful of dried apple slices makes a worthy chocolate substitute during Day 2 of Lent, but will it hold up through Day 40?
  3. Wet blanket quote of the day: “…eliminating artificial dyes does not turn chocolate bars into health foods,” says Andrew Adesman, regarding Nestle’s announcement they will remove artificial flavors and dyes from their candy bars. Darn!

eye glasses

  1. Tech Tip #437: Grapefruit juice dried on a computer screen is harder to remove than super glue. Therefore, do not eat grapefruit while using your tablet or notebook at the breakfast table.
  2. Money-Saving Tip #69: Thirty-One parties billed as church youth group fundraisers are dangerous. Enter at your own risk.
  3. Fashion Tip #198: Those of us who wore big eye glasses in their last go around, and remember how they continually slid down the nose 3 seconds after pushing them back up, are not excited to see the trend returning.

Parenthood finale

  1. Delight: When you step in the door to visit your kids and your grandchild runs to greet you, arms wide open, and asking, “Grammy Jo and Papoo! Want to play ‘Where are my toes?'”
  2. When I picked up Mom for her dentist appointment, she made it very clear she didn’t want to go…all the way to the car….all the way to the dentist’s office…and all the time we were there. When I said, “Well, I didn’t like going to the dentist when I was a child, but you took me anyway because you cared about me,” her response was, “That’s a whole different story.” Yes, I am officially parenting my parent.
  3. Hard on the heels of the Parenthood finale was the announcement that Downton Abbey will end after Season 6. So the search begins now for a good series or two to replace them. Fans of either show, what do you recommend?

Let-Me-Be-Frank-With-You

  1. The sun’s been hanging around until almost 6 PM lately. Don’t say that too loudly when you’re outdoors. We don’t want to scare it away.
  2. Happiness is when your mom’s only living sister and her husband, two dear people who have been part of your life since forever, call and say, “Don’t you and your sister and brother beat yourselves up for moving your mom to assisted living. You did everything you could for her for many years. Remember that.”
  3. I finished Lila by Marilynne Robinson a couple weeks ago and thought it was one of the best books I’ve read in a good long while. Then I read Let Me Be Frank With You by Richard Ford and thought it was one of the best books I’ve read in a good long while. What’s one of the best books you’ve read in a good long while?
