- Is anyone else out there getting so used to automati glass doors that you have nearly run into the ones that don’t open when you draw near? Please, someone say I’m not alone in this.
- Someday, I hope to bake a fruit pie that will not boil over. Today, alas, is not that day.
- Not too long ago, I had an intense phone call with a dear friend who moved out of state. Her mother is critically ill, so we closed by inviting Jesus into the conversation and gave him an earful. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.

- It has recently come to my attention that humans are the only species whose females go through menopause. Now I have something to occupy my thoughts during night sweats.
- An indigo bunting landed on the walking path a few feet in front of me one morning this week. How beautiful must be the Creator of such beauty.
- The percentage of senior citizen bank robbers is on the rise. Good news for those with the bucket list line item “live a life of crime.”
What’s the most surprising item on your bucket list?

- When writing a mystery novel set in northwest South Dakota, determine the color, make, and model of every character’s dusty pick up truck before writing the story so the information doesn’t have to be painstakingly added later.
- Keep in mind that readers can’t picture what’s in an author’s head until the author describes it.
- Writing and editing are hard work. But they’re also incredibly fun. So authors should get over the guilt of having the best job in the world and simply enjoy it.

- As of this writing Barack Obama is not following me on Twitter, nor has Hilliary Clinton asked to connect with me on LinkedIn. I will issue a press release as the situation progresses.
- On the Republican side of things, none of the candidates attending Iowa straw poll have responded to my free housing invitation. To add insult to injury Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee didn’t even call to say they won’t even be attending.
- Apparently, running for class president in fifth grade and losing to my opponent only because he was a boy and our class had more boys than girls does not give a person enough political credibility to be taken seriously in the run up to the 2016 presidential election.

- The top of my dresser is covered with toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, and coconut shells. Can you guess who is going to receive a cornucopia of craft supplies from his grammy this weekend?
- Our son-in-law received his Masters of Fine Arts in Acting and Directing from the University of Wisconsin, Madison last weekend. Kailen Fleck, we are so proud of you!
- 30 years ago this month we celebrated our little boy’s 3rd birthday just before we moved from Camp Crook, South Dakota to Boone, Iowa. This year I just completed the first draft of a novel set in the tiny town where we used to live…just in time to spend the weekend celebrating our son’s 33rd birthday and our son-in-law’s graduation. The best things in life are worth the wait!

- Iowa’s Republican straw poll has introduced some changes to make it less expensive for the candidates dabbling their toes in the presidential race waters. I would gladly add to the cost savings by offering free lodging at our house, which is closer to the straw poll venue than the nearest hotel, in exchange for having my name removed from every political mailing list and our television McGyvered to go silent during political ads during the upcoming presidential season.
- College-bound high schoolers will soon have the option of taking a computer-based ACTs rather than the paper and pencil test. I hope the test proctors will pump the aroma of #2 pencil lead and wood shavings into the computer labs. The tests just won’t be the same without it.
- I totally understand the Minnesota state senate law banning eye contact in their chambers. As the child of a Minnesota mother and niece of numerous Minnesota uncles and aunts, not making eye contact is the norm for natives of that great state. Making eye contact is considered pushy. And for their generation the proper response to “I love you” is a very uncomfortable “I know,” a quick change of subject, and an offer to fix you a sandwich.
How do your elders respond to “I love you?”
