For I am God and there is no other;
I am God and there is no one like Me,
Declaring the end from the beginning
And from ancient times the things which have not been done…
Isaiah 46: 9b – 10a
This summer, my life has been like one of those movies that starts with a huge, panoramic shot of the universe and narrows its focus until the only thing in view is one event or place or person.
As our daughter’s wedding day draws closer, the big event has become the only thing on my movie screen. Oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico, tornadoes in Minnesota and Michigan, and the kerfuffle over some general’s remarks in Rolling Stone Magazine pale compared to purchasing comfortable shoes for the bride, finding the right shade of ribbon for table decorations, and gathering costumes for the photo booth. My days are consumed with creating to do lists for me, for Anne, for Hiram and for anyone else brave (or foolish) enough to offer to help.
Some days – to be honest, every day lately – when a new wave of party plans engulfs me, I’m tempted to throw everything overboard. No more lunch with friends. Forget about doing any writing. Nix the thought of an afternoon at the pool. Skip devotions and my walk before breakfast. Get busy, girl, there’s work to be done!
But wait. If I abandon my morning walk with God, who will reveal how our tiny piece of the world fits in the vast panorama of the universe? Who will restore my perspective when I’m self-absorbed and out of whack? Who will admonish me to trust Him when events don’t unfold as planned? Who will remind me that He holds my daughter’s wedding in His hand?
If I abandon my morning walk with God, no one else can whisper the words I need to hear. No one else can provide the right perspective I so desperately need. Why? Because He alone is God. There is no one like Him, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times the things which have not been done…right down to choosing the color of ribbon for table decorations and gathering costumes for the photo booth.
So between now and the big day, our morning walk together tops my to do list. After all, God sees the big picture, which makes Him the best wedding planner around. I’d be a fool to abandon help from Him.
