- Yes, global warming is a reality to be confronted. But an early morning walk in November without a coat is a present grace to be savored.
- A house without grandchildren is like pie without ice cream: comfortable and satisfying, but missing a sweet little something.
- Speaking of pie, I’ll be baking apple, cherry, and mince for Thanksgiving. You?

- The NPR comedy news show, Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, was recorded last week in Des Moines. The same week, 4 GOP candidates went pheasant hunting with Congressman Steve King. Proof that Iowans are more diverse than most people believe.
- We attended a delightful high school production of James and the Giant Peach directed by my niece. The costumes were gorgeous and the acting was top notch. Kuddos to all!
- Our daughter and son-in-law are here while I’m one-handed and the Man of Steel is laid up with a bad back. So far they’ve fixed our stove, winterized the house, rearranged the living room, brought in the house plants from the porch, washed bedding and remade beds, driven us to appointments and to the store, and so much more. What would we do without them?
Who can’t you do without? Leave a comment.

- Is it possible that Pele` really is 75? Wasn’t he running around on the soccer field, like yesterday?
- Nobody writes mysteries Louise Penny, and her latest doesn’t disappoint. The only bad thing about The Nature of the Beast is that it ends.
- You know your children have reached adulthood when they rearrange their lives to come home and help when their parents are in a tight spot. We are so grateful for them.
When did you know your kids were adults? Leave a comment.

- In an interview, a aerospace engineer suggested the US explore Mars with a satellite for the bargain basement price of 75 million dollars. That was, perhaps, the first time the phrases “bargain basement price” and “75 million dollars” were used in the same sentence.
- My 3-year-old grandson is learning to use magic words like “please” and “thank you.” But because he’s only 3, he calls them “maggot words.” Such a word picture.
- Sometimes, the beauty that is October brings tears to my eyes. What brings tears to your eyes in October?

- Improbable as it sounds, it is possible for a grown woman to lose control of the knife she’s using to remove the label from a container destined for recycling, stab her hand at the base of the thumb, and sever the tendon to thumb, even though the wound is only a centimeter wide and barely bleeds. Don’t ask how I know this.
- If such a scenario occurs and the grown woman is examined by a hand surgeon who repairs severed tendons, he may look admiringly at the incision and say, “Talk about surgical precision! The odds of hitting that exact spot on purpose, much less by accident, are almost impossible.”
- Not only that, but the surgery team will cut the grown woman a lot of slack for her stupidity because the accident only happened because she was doing her part to save the environment.

- I’m taking the death of Yogi Berra pretty hard. Not because I’m a Yankee fan. But because the media tributes have revealed that at least half of my dad best one liners were plagiarized from the great ball player.
- After double-checking the math, I can confidently say that having 3 books published in 1 year + completing a mystery novel = almost 2 much.
- With a winter’s worth of jugs full of rain water for the house plants in the basement, as well as several apple pies and bags of basil pesto in the freezer, our home has that Little House in the Big Woods cozy feeling.
What makes your house feel Little House in the Big Woods cozy?
