Yesterday morning, I was tapping away at my computer when the doorbell rang. Surprised, I headed for the kitchen and spied the Hy-Vee floral delivery truck. \u201cThat\u2019s weird,\u201d I thought. \u201cWho would send flowers to me?\u201d<\/p>\n

The friendly Hy-Vee delivery man waited at the door. \u201cDoes Jolene Philo live here?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He raised an eyebrow. \u201cSpecial day for you, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

I thought a minute \u2013 no birthday, no anniversary, no windfall on Wall Street \u2013 before it hit me. \u201cWell, my first book is being released today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCongratulations!\u201d He held up a finger. \u201cI\u2019ll be back in a minute.\u201d And he was, carrying a huge balloon bouquet up our rather long sidewalk.<\/p>\n

I went partway to meet him. \u201cThank you so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, as\u00a0 I grabbed the bouquet and turned toward the house, he held up a finger. \u201cWe\u2019re not done yet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Surprised, I hurried into the house, set down the bouquet and ran outside in time to meet him halfway down the sidewalk and grab the second bouquet. \u201cThank you so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

He held up a finger. \u201cWe\u2019re not done yet,\u201d he said and headed for the truck.<\/p>\n

By the time we were done yet, the two of us had met our exercise quota for the day, and he\u2019d delivered five very large balloon bouquets from Mom, my sister\u2019s family, my brother\u2019s family, and my Le Mars relatives. The kitchen was full to bursting, and having seen the Pixar movie Up not to long ago, I was a little bit worried. (How come my son didn\u2019t have \u201chouse uprooted by helium balloons\u201d on his worry list Sunday night?)<\/p>\n

But I was more flabbergasted than worried. See, I don\u2019t come from a gifty family. Now, we\u2019re darn good at birthday cakes, because birthday cakes are dessert and our family is exceptionally gifted at consuming desserts. And over the years, we\u2019ve gotten better at saying \u201cI love you,\u201d sending birthday cards, and the occasional hug.\u00a0 On the other hand, no one will ever engrave \u201cOur beloved celebrated special events with hoopla and flair\u201d on our tombstones.<\/p>\n

So I stood in the kitchen for a long time staring at the balloons and wondering what on earth possessed them to spend money so frivolously and where on earth I will put the bouquets this weekend when the rellies \u2013 Mom, sister, nephew, brother\u2019s family, uncle and aunt, cousins and their families and my kids \u2013 arrive for our Labor Day Reunion weekend.<\/p>\n

And then, gone giddy with the scent of latex, Mylar, and slowly leaking helium, I lost my head and did a little happy dance. What else can a girl do when her family says, \u201cWe love you?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
