Our lives have changed so much in the past two years, as this recycled post from December 16, 2010 reveals. New jobs, weddings, one book published and another in progress, and not so much snow on the ground this December as in years past.<\/p>\n

But much is still the same. Once again, I\u2019m praying for good weather for our kids as they travel. And the Christmas baking tradition is as much a part of the season as ever. In fact, we\u2019re are looking forward to baking together once we gather next week. In fact, on New Year\u2019s Eve, the two newlywed couples are planning a pizza bake-off, using the recipes they\u2019ve perfected in the months since they made their vows. Hiram and I are to be the judges. But declaring a winner is a moot point because I\u2019m already the grand prize winner in this contest.<\/p>\n

Prize #1 a night off for this cook. Prizes # 2 & 3 are two new recipes to share in future blog posts. Score!<\/p>\n

Baking Up a Storm – Recycled<\/strong><\/p>\n

When the kids were little and I was a schoolteacher, snow days were baking days at our house. I thought that chapter of my life was over, now that the kids are grown and I work at home. This morning, my son came downstairs and looked outside. He declared the day not good for splitting and hauling wood. \u201cMaybe today we should make cookies,\u201d he suggested.<\/p>\n

So while I reorganized my office, sorted mail, and finished an article, he started baking. By mid-afternoon, we had three boxes of biscotti ready to mail: one for Mike and Brenda who housed us two weekends ago, one for the Trauma Therapy Institute, and one for Discovery House Publishers. A box of shortbread was ready to send to the monks.<\/p>\n

All morning, I kept shaking my head. \u201cIs this real?\u201d I asked myself every five minutes. \u201cIs my son in the kitchen baking?\u201d Over the past five years, I had made peace with his decision to be a monk. I blocked out the hope of any other end to his story.<\/p>\n

Our trip to the post office to mail the boxes was uneventful, so the goodies are on the way. But the pick up got stuck in our driveway on the way home, and we had to walk the rest of the way. I can see the snow piling up on the hood as I write.<\/p>\n

The immediate future is unsettled at our house. Allen\u2019s adjusting to the outside world. I\u2019m adjusting to having him around.\u00a0 My husband is driving home in a snowstorm tonight, and the weather doesn\u2019t look good for Anne\u2019s return from college Thursday. When they do get home, they can\u2019t get into the garage because of the pick up blocking the driveway.<\/p>\n

But this afternoon, I\u2019m not worried about the future. Instead, I\u2019m relishing a stormy day spent baking, getting stuck in the driveway, hiking through the snow, and the gift of sharing these things with my son.<\/p>\n
