\"broccoli\"<\/a>Fantastic Friday is here again, so it’s time to feature another Gravel Road post from the past. This one first appeared just a year ago, and it was an immediate favorite with readers. Since this week began with President’s Day, it’s a logical and hilarious choice for today. This post first appeared here on February 21, 2014.<\/em><\/p>\n

Broccoli Obama and Other Presidential Trivia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last Sunday, I created a lesson for an evening activity for kids at our church. The task unleashed my latent school teacher. By the time the kids arrived, I was armed and dangerous. I had a plethora of Presidents\u2019 Day trivia about Washington and Lincoln as well as coloring sheets, and word searches. Little did I know how much the children would add to that great body of knowledge.<\/p>\n

The first group of kids were first through third graders who knew Monday was Presidents\u2019 Day. They thought the holiday had something to do with birthdays, but needed some pretty broad hints before they landed on George and Abe.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they\u2019re both dead,\u201d one child announced. \u201cWhen is our real president\u2019s birthday?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh yeah,\u201d a girl chimed in. \u201cHe has a funny name. It\u2019s hard to remember.\u201d The entire group agreed with her. They hemmed and hawed, trying to remember the real president\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis name reminds me of that one vegetable.\u201d She thought for a moment, and her face lit up. \u201cBroccoli!\u201d she exclaimed. \u201cHis name sounds like broccoli.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh yeah!\u201d everyone chorused. \u201cBroccoli Obama!\u201d<\/p>\n

Giggle.<\/em><\/p>\n

The next group of kids were four and five-year-olds. Amazingly, they named Broccoli<\/del> Barack Obama without batting an eye.<\/p>\n

When asked what the president does, one little boy answered confidently. \u201cHe rides around in a car and kills bad guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d another boy disagreed. \u201cPresident Obama is a good leader.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, good leadership didn\u2019t have the same allure as a sound bite about riding around in a car killing bad guys. Most of the kids bought into the car theory and stuck with it, even while they colored pictures of Abe Lincoln\u2019s log cabin and the young George Washington working as a surveyor.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee this?\u201d A sandy-haired boy pointed to some orange lines he\u2019d drawn on the log cabin\u2019s doorway. \u201cThat\u2019s a booby trap so bad guys can\u2019t get in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSee this?\u201d A little blond guy pointed to George\u2019s surveying equipment. \u201cThat bottom part turns into the gun for killing bad guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sigh.<\/em><\/p>\n

The final group were fourth and fifth graders. They breezed through the President\u2019s Day trivia, and were surprised to hear that George and Martha never lived there. They even knew the first White House burned down and had to be rebuilt.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d a serious boy said. \u201cThat kind of thing still happens. My mom told me that some tourists ran a train into the Octagon, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

I thought for a moment. \u201cDo you mean Pentagon?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah! That\u2019s it. The Pentagon!\u201d<\/p>\n

The boy beside him added to the confusion. \u201cAnd some other tourists ran a plane into a tall building in New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Twin Towers,\u201d I explained. \u201cThey were terrorists, not tourists. That happened in 2001.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c2001?\u201d The Octagon tourist reporter did some figuring in his head. \u201cThat was two years before I was born.\u201d<\/p>\n

The boy beside him pointed at the coloring pictures. \u201cCan we do those?\u201d They colored industriously, sure as only children can be, that their parents and their country\u2019s president, Broccoli Obama, will kill the bad guys and keep them safe from tourists attacking the Octagon.<\/p>\n

Pray.<\/em><\/p>\n
