\"Doe<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week, my heart grew heavier and heavier
\nas the media reported more and more bad news.
\nDowned airliners.
\nFighting in the Middle East.
\nPeople in this country shouting at refugee children,
\nholding ugly signs telling them to to home.<\/p>\n

I gave God an earful.
\nI told him I wasn’t sure about living in a world as cruel as this,
\na world stripped of loveliness and compassion,
\na world devoid of beauty.<\/p>\n

And then, God answered,
\nas He so often does,
\non my morning walk.<\/p>\n

I looked up,
\nand there on the edge of the woods,
\nstood a doe.
\nImmobile.
\nI walked closer and closer
\nto where she stood sentry.
\nCloser than I’ve ever been to a deer before.<\/p>\n

Close enough to see
\nher heavy udder,
\nher swollen teats.
\nShe bravely held her ground,
\nwatching over a hidden fawn,
\ntrembling,
\nbut never flinching
\nas I passed by.<\/p>\n

Then, at the end of my walk
\nas I ascended our driveway,
\nGod spoke again.<\/p>\n

A male indigo bunting,
\nvery small,
\nvery young,
\nsat on the gravel only a few steps away.
\nHe hopped about,
\nflew into the bushes unsteadily,
\nthen flew with wobbly precision across the driveway
\nand perched in one tree,
\nthen on the dead branch of another.<\/p>\n

I stood,
\ntransfixed by the courageous bird,
\npatchy with iridescent blue feathers
\nand intoxicated
\nwith the freedom of flight,
\nuntil he took wing again
\nand flew away.<\/p>\n

“My world is filled
\nwith brave mothers,
\nwith courageous children,”
\nHe said.
