The following items top my gloomy Gus list.<\/p>\n<p>Gas went over $3.00 a gallon.<br \/>\nThe peaceful Egyptian protests went nasty.<br \/>\nFood prices will soon rise.<br \/>\nNot as many new jobs were created as expected.<br \/>\nThe folks in Washington spend all their time blaming one another for problems\u00a0 instead of finding solutions.<br \/>\nThe big blizzard predictions were accurate which will encourage the forecasters to greater hype heights in the future.<br \/>\nIran may have a nuclear bomb in less than a year.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side, there\u2019s only enough good news to fill a peck measure.<\/p>\n<p>The local street department plowed out our road very quickly.<br \/>\nMy spreadsheet program can make really cool checklists.<br \/>\nAt the bakery yesterday, I resisted all the doughnuts calling my name and ordered a salad for lunch.<\/p>\n<p>In an unbalanced news week like this one, it\u2019s hard to keep smiling. I mean, how\u2019s a person supposed to stay perky when nothing can be done about this miserable state of affairs.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t lower gas prices.<br \/>\nI can\u2019t do anything about Egypt.<br \/>\nI can\u2019t stop eating.<br \/>\nI can\u2019t create jobs.<br \/>\nI can\u2019t influence politicians.<br \/>\nI can\u2019t stop the weather.<br \/>\nI can\u2019t infiltrate Iran\u2019s nuclear plants.<\/p>\n<p>Everything I can\u2019t do leaves me feeling helpless. So instead, I\u2019m going to concentrate on what I can do.<\/p>\n<p>I can ride my bike more when the weather gets better.<br \/>\nI can pray for Egypt.<br \/>\nI can serve leftovers for supper.<br \/>\nI can build my business and hire employees someday.<br \/>\nI can vote.<br \/>\nI can dress for the weather.<br \/>\nI can trust God\u2019s power to be greater than any nuclear weapon.<br \/>\nBest of all, I can take Mom to lunch and the library on this cold sunny day.<\/p>\n<p>What I can do isn\u2019t big, but it is important.
