Most of the year, the view from east our bedroom window is run-of-the-mill.
\nOur lawn.
\nThe neighbor\u2019s driveway.
\nThe rise of a hill and woods in the distance.<\/p>\n

But for a few days each spring, our view is a thing of beauty…
\nIf a warm March doesn\u2019t lure the magnolia buds to become vulnerable too early.
\nIf a hard April frost doesn\u2019t destroy the emerging blossoms.
\nIf a wayward May frost doesn\u2019t nip the delicate, fully opened flowers.<\/p>\n

This cold spring held the magnolia tree captive until the end of April.
\nWhen the sun finally coax the timid blossoms into bright and glorious bloom.
\nWhen my mother was here, sleeping in our bedroom with the magnificent view.
\nWhen we slept upstairs, the lovely flowers out of our sight line.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat magnolia tree is lovely,\u201d she said.
\n\u201cI like to lay in bed and look at it,\u201d she said.
\n\u201cIt is so pretty,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The wind blew on the day she left.
\nThe tree limbs waved in greeting as we moved into our room with the view.
\nThe next morning I photographed the sight.
\nThe morning after that a glittering, May frost covered the ground.
\nThe magnificent view was gone for another year, maybe longer.<\/p>\n

Except for in my mother\u2019s world.
\nFor her, the view is still unsullied.
\nFor her, the tree still blooms bright and pink.
\nFor her, the sun still streams through the east window.<\/p>\n

In her memory, perfection remains.
