As Brits living in East Africa, our American friends were some of the most generous people we\u2019d ever met.<\/p>\n

However, I must admit that I was taken aback to receive some gifts for my baby before her birth. At the time, I wasn\u2019t au fait with the American culture of \u201cbaby shower\u201d before the baby\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n

Little did any of us know that our precious unborn baby was T.E.F. \/O.A., and her birth was to throw our lives into turmoil such as we\u2019d never experienced.<\/p>\n

One of the presents I received that day was a Baby\u2019s Firsts<\/em> book. It was beautifully laid out, ready to receive baby\u2019s first lock of hair after her first haircut, date of sighting of baby\u2019s first tooth and records of baby\u2019s first words.<\/p>\n

I never filled out one page in that book. Baby\u2019s first year in our house was a dark tunnel for me. I thought cynically \u2013 why don\u2019t I write a Baby\u2019s Firsts<\/em> book recording baby\u2019s first stay in intensive care, baby\u2019s first time we didn\u2019t think she would make it through the night, and baby\u2019s first 10 antibiotics before she became immune to them and needed something stronger?<\/p>\n

I love the American generous spirit. However, at the risk of being controversial, wouldn\u2019t it be an idea to wait and see who and what God brings along before giving gifts? Maggi is a wife and mother of two daughters. She is a primary school teacher, having worked in Africa for 14 years before moving to the Middle East. Her passions are her animals and art. Her youngest daughter was born with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF)<\/a>. This birth condition was to be the start of an arduous journey, impacting the whole family for several years.
