Three Thoughts for Thursday

Empire Falls, Paul Newman, spring all around, and another career path dashed in this week's three thoughts.

  1. Baby bunnies in the flowerbed, a flock of twitterpated goldfinches in a grassy ditch, and broken robin egg shells on the road. Spring has sprung!
  2. After serving on the steering committee for an upcoming weekend camp, I have realized that event planning is not my calling.
  3. The HBO adaptation of Richard Russo’s Empire Falls is wonderful in so many ways. A favorite book by a favorite author who wrote the screenplay. Perfect casting of so many top tier actors, including Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Newman, in his final film role, nails his part. And his blue eyes still shine.

Cinco de Mayo, enchiladas, No Pants Day, and sighting Jamaica in this week's 3 thoughts.

  1. Today is Cinco de Mayo and National Enchilada Day. What a coincidence!
  2. In May of 1494, during his second trip to the Americas, Columbus sighted Jamaica for the first time. May of 2016 would be a good month for me to sight Jamaica for the first time, also.
  3. Tomorrow is No Pants Day. Will you be celebrating?

Contentment, discontent, grandkids, and curly hair in this week's three thoughts.

  1. What it means to be content: Knowing you are right where you should be, doing exactly what God spent your lifetime preparing you to do.
  2. What it means to be discontent: Knowing you are right where you should be, doing exactly what God spent your lifetime preparing you to do, while constantly wishing you had thick, curly hair and missing your grandkid so much it hurts.
  3. How to overcome discontent: Write a mystery novel with a fictional protagonist with thick, curly hair, lives near her grandkids, and is right where she should be, doing exactly what God prepared her to do

Weddings, flower girls, and puns in this week's 3 thoughts.

  1. My niece is engaged, so naturally I offered my services as flower girl at her wedding next November.
  2. She declined the offer but asked me to head up the crew making pies for the reception.
  3. She also said that if I don’t wear an apron while baking, that would make me a “flour” girl.

Ba-dum-bum.

Spring fawns, Dolly Parton, and cherry blossoms in this week's 3 thoughts.

  1. Dear Doe, I hope your spring fawn is adorable. Consider having twins to make up for eating the bark off the trunk of the new tree in our yard.
  2. Dear Dolly Parton, On the rare occasions I google my first name, the song you recorded in 1973 pops up. It’s haunted me since my senior year in high school. Perhaps we should consider sharing the royalties. Please contact me at your earliest convenience.
  3. Dear Mother Nature, I would love to see the cherry blossoms this weekend during my trip to DC. Could you arrange it? Your prompt attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.

Magnolia blossoms, Patty Duke, and my life as a mean girl in this week's three thoughts.

  1. Daily delight: The sight of magnolia blossoms swaying in the breeze outside the bedroom window.
  2. Memorable moment: Patty Duke’s portrayal of Helen Keller. Both strong women who made our world a better place for many.
  3. True Confession: My big sister and I tormented our little brother by calling him Tuffy Wuffy Boo when we walked to church on Sundays. How mean girl is that?
